A 4x4 girls’ trip on the world’s largest sand island – what could go wrong?!

Camping on the beach and 4Wing are two of my favourite things to do and there’s no better place to do that than on Queensland’s very own Fraser Island. This breathtakingly beautiful island paradise is packed full of adventures waiting to be discovered. Who better to explore this heaven on earth with than your Gal Pal?
Fraser Island is the perfect destination for two thrill-seeking girls like my friend Jess and I to travel for a few action-packed days in nature. We both love nothing more than getting outdoors – whether it’s hiking, camping or scuba diving, we’ll give it a crack!
With our hire 4WD from Rainbow Adventure Centre and our camping essentials in the back we headed out for a few days on K’Gari – the indigenous name for Fraser Island which means ‘paradise’. Let me tell you it 100% lives up to its name!
For the most epic adventure on Fraser Island, you must hire a 4WD as so many of the sites are only accessible by 4WD, so buckle up and enjoy the ride! But what are the top travel hotspots you should visit on a trip to Fraser Island? Below I give you the low down.
Maheno Shipwreck
Washed ashore by a cyclone in 1935 the S.S. Maheno is beached near The Pinnacles and has become a landmark attraction for adventurers. It’s just one of many shipwrecks that you can explore during a trip to Fraser Island! Our road trip started here, and we loved wandering along the sandy beach with the cool blue ocean in the background to take some Insta worthy snaps – bliss!

Champagne Pools
Natural swimming pools with spectacular views on the edge of the ocean, what’s not to love? As its name suggests, waves lap over the pools and you can feel the water fizzing around you with seafoam. Grab a floatie, a pack of ciders and some tunes, and relax watching the sunset with your mates. The perfect end to a perfect day.

Lake Allom
Immerse yourself in nature at the only forested lake on the island. Kickback and watch the world go by as you keep an eye out for Krefft’s river turtle swimming along the surface. Like other spots on our road trip, Lake Allom is part of the Fraser Island World Heritage Area for its extraordinary natural beauty.

Eli Creek
Spectacular views and an ideal spot for a picnic, Eli Creek is a must-do when you visit Fraser Island. An enormous four million litres of sparkling freshwater pour into the ocean every hour from Eli Creek – the largest creek on the east side of Fraser Island. DON'T FORGET to pack your floats!

Lake McKenzie
Queensland at its best Lake McKenzie is simply stunning – there’s a reason it’s the most famous lake on the island! With pure white sand that feels soft as velvet beneath your feet, Lake McKenzie is a flawless spot to camp and soak in the view with great facilities nearby.
Central Station
Go from a vast sandy beach to a tropical rainforest at Central Station. This place feels like another world in contrast to the sun-soaked coast and is another gorgeous location for setting up camp for the night where you can experience the beautiful flora and fauna that call Fraser Island home.
Lake Birrabeen
Similar to Lake McKenzie, but less crowded, Lake Birrabeen is the absolute place to end your trip. Escape the craziness of the everyday by sunbathing on the white shandy shores of Lake Birrabeen and take in the glittering blue waters. You can see why it’s a photographer’s nirvana!

Despite massive storm warnings during our last night on the Island we didn’t let that stop us from maxing out on this experience. You can’t keep a good girl down, right?! For a touch of luxury, we treated ourselves to an eco-glamping tent at the Beach Camp retreat.

Jess and I can’t recommend Fraser Island enough and we are super keen to head back to explore more of this island paradise. If you’ve ever wanted to try 4WDing or are looking for a place to relax and explore nature in Queensland, add Fraser Island to your travel list!
Home to unrivalled beauty Fraser Island is the picture-perfect escape for everyone with an adventurous spirit, so grab your mates, a 4WD and get out there!
Until next time,
Tiff x
